Co-founded by Jennie Gilbert, the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC) is a voluntary non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles.
With six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles located in our region, the Great Barrier Reef is home to a great number of turtles that are seriously under threat as a result of both natural and human induced factors, including:
At the rehabilitation centre based on Fitzroy Island, Jennie and her dedicated team are committed to rehabilitating as many sick and injured turtles as their resources will allow, while also raising awareness of issues faced by marine turtles through publicity and education.
As long-time supporters of the centre, Sunlover not only assisted in the initial set up of the centre through the donation of land, we are also committed to playing an ongoing role in its success through fundraising efforts, media exposure, transport of volunteers, and assisting with turtle releases from our Moore Reef Maine Base.
We have even sponsored our own turtle that we called 'Sunny' on behalf of our crew. You can also sponsor a turtle - just ask Jennie about options. What a fantastic corporate gift - you may even be able to attend the release as some of the staff from Cairns Regional Council did with their sponsored turtle Francis.
Visitors to the island are welcome to take a tour of the centre to find out more about the work Jennie and her team do, and to meet some of the turtles currently being treated. These one hour tours which are run daily, are limited to 15 people and can be booked at the Fitzroy Island Resort General Store on the day of travel.
