Fitzroy Island Fun

At just 4 square kilometres in size, Fitzroy Island packs a lot of tropical punch.

Despite the name, Nudey Beach is not a clothing free beach, but it is one of the most spectacular beaches in Australia. Ranked number 1 in Brad Farmers, Australia’s 101 Best Beaches awards of 2018, Nudey Beach is a spectacular white coral beach, fringed with palm trees to provide some shade while basking on the sand looking out over the clear blue waters to the mainland.  You can also snorkel directly off the beach and explore the rich corals and colourful marine life.

Kayaking, Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy is covered in tropical rainforest, of which 95% is listed as a protected National Park. There are plenty of walking tracks of varying lengths for all abilities.  Explore the Secret Garden track (one kilometre return) or tackle the 3.6 kilometre return Lighthouse track to the lighthouse, which offers spectacular views of the ocean and, in winter, migrating humpback whales. Look for birds such as rose-crowned fruit-doves and metallic starlings, as well as large goannas. Challenge yourself on the 3.6 kilometre return boulder-strewn Summit track which climbs through woodland to the island’s summit (269 metres) where slabs of granite and windswept casuarina trees frame magnificent views over the island, surrounding reefs and mainland.

Fitzroy Island is also home to the amazing Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, which is a voluntary non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of injured and sick marine turtles brought in from the Great Barrier Reef and Cape York Peninsula.

As long-time supporters of the centre, Sunlover not only played a part in the initial set up of the facility through donations and fundraising, we are also committed to playing an ongoing role in its success through fundraising efforts, transport of volunteers, and assisting with turtle releases from our Moore Reef Marine Base. Tours of the centre run daily for one hour and are limited to 15 people. You can only book the tour once you are physically on the island, so head to the Fitzroy Island Resort General Store to secure a place.

If you do happen to miss out, try swimming in the waters just outside the centre where there are quite often turtles swimming freely in the temperate waters.

No visit to Fitzroy is complete without a sundowner at Foxy’s – the legendary bar and restaurant at the Fitzroy Island Resort. Looking out over the palms and beaches, it is the perfect spot to relax and look at some of the amazing photos you will have surely captured during the day.
