Master Reef Guides

Established in 2019, the Master Reef Guides Program is an initiative of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GRMPA), Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators, and Tourism and Events Queensland.

The Master Reef Guide program was developed to educate our visitors about the reef environment and protection. Master Reef Guides are recognised as the world’s leading reef guides, interpreters and story tellers sharing the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. These reef ambassadors can provide up to date information on the Reef, share stories of the magical World Heritage Area and explain what you can do to make a difference.

In order to become a Master Reef Guide, potential candidates need to be nominated, shortlisted, interviewed and selected, before undertaking both online and in-field training.

Our Marine Biologist, Pablo Cogollos was selected and intensively trained to graduate as one of the very first Master Reef Guides, with Marine Naturalist Luke Smith graduating in the second cohort.  As a passionate environmental advocate and volunteer, his love for the Reef is infectious, and through this program he hopes to ignite interest in Reef conservation among guests.

Pablo and Luke run our citizen science programs Marine Biologist for a Day and Marine Biologist by Day, Astronomer by Night. If you see Pablo or Luke onboard, feel free to ask them any questions you have about the reef.
