MARINE BIOLOGIST FOR A DAY

This is a Citizen Science program for groups of amateur and serious environmentalists (not just school students) who come from all over the world to enjoy a very special underwater classroom on the Great Barrier Reef and participate in our highly regarded Marine Biologist for a Day program.

The program is an in-depth educational experience linked to the Australian School Curriculum created and conducted by our team of marine experts including two Master Reef Guides. Topics include reef ecology, climate change, marine life identification, and predators such as Crown of Thorns starfish.

During the day participants are led on Guided Snorkel Safari (which is suitable for non-swimmers as you are led on buoyant ring), where students fill out a ‘Rapid Monitoring Survey’, which uses a monitoring slate to record health observations on aspects of the reef. This includes identifying marine creatures, analysing coral health and looking for signs of environmental impacts. This data is then inputted directly to the “Eye on the Reef” program run by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA).

Reef enthusiasts are also educated on the various sea creatures that inhabit Moore Reef, environmental aspects that impact on the reef and how they can lower their carbon footprint in their everyday lives.

ASTRONOMER FOR A NIGHT

We have now added an optional overnight experience sleeping in deluxe swags on our Marine Base to study the astronomy of the southern night skies. At approximately 40km off the coast of Cairns our Marine Base is far away from the light pollution of the cities and the stars seem to shine brighter and more brilliantly when viewed from the outer Great Barrier Reef.

Participants will use binoculars and a telescope to view the stars as they are taught about the astronomical features of the Southern Hemisphere and how it was used in the past for navigation.

This is a once in a lifetime experience for students, that is fully hosted by marine experts who provide a unique learning experience in a safe, controlled environment. Enquire now about dates that coincide with a lunar or solar eclipse.

Plus, there is still plenty of time to enjoy some of the many additional exciting activities on our Marine Base!

DURING THIS EXPERIENCE OUR MARINE NATURALIST WILL DISCUSS:

The Great Barrier Reef’s:

The Southern Hemisphere’s:

Specific content tailored to school assessments (on request)

BY THE END OF THE EXPERIENCE STUDENTS WILL HAVE LEARNED ABOUT:

At the end of the experience, students will be presented with their very own Marine Biologist for a Day & Astronomer for a Night Certificate.

Who knew learning could be so much fun?
